Modelling of flow, thermal and geomechanics processes in CCS projects

Tim Wynn and Ed Stephens from TRACS attended the recent SPE & GESGB CO2 Storage Conference 2024 held on 1 – 2 October 2024 at the Chester Hotel, Aberdeen. Tim Wynn, Principal Geologist and Geomechanics Specialist at TRACS presented a talk on day 2 that covered three topics. Modelling of flow, thermal and geomechanics processes in CCS projects.

The conference was sold out and a number of excellent talks covered regulations and planning, storage site characterisation, legacy well integrity modelling and remediation, project planning and injector designs. Tim presented a talk on day 2 that covered three topics

  1. Modelling of brine cushion injection to mitigate CO2 plume migration in saline aquifers (Ed Stephens)
  2. Comparison of simulations of the Joule Thompson effect during CO2 injection into depleted gas reservoirs (Tian Xia)
  3. Geomechanical considerations during CO2 injection including thermal effects and the role of halite (Tim Wynn)
