Reservoir Architecture in
Syn-Rift Systems
The course is designed for Geoscientists, Petrophysicists, Reservoir Engineers and Well Engineers. Can be structured for groups working in multi-discipline asset-based teams, and can be adapted for regional scale exploration.

The Corinth Gulf provides a world-famous exposure of a rift basin that allows us to explore a “3D seismic volume” in the field. The focus is appreciation of the wide range of reservoir types that we should anticipate over short distances in rift basins. We will use the exceptional outcrops to discuss reservoir modelling in a range of settings: continental, delta and submarine fan.
Although this event has a reservoir modelling focus it can also be delivered with a rift basin/passive margin exploration flavour.
Course Itinerary
Day 1 – 3D architecture of a rift basin and prediction of play elements; focus on carbonate reservoirs
Day 2 – Cross section through a rift basin and temporal evolution; focus on fluvial reservoirs
Day 3 – Gilbert deltas and relay ramps; focus on Shelf margin reservoirs
Day 4 – Proximal or distal? Deep water clastic reservoirs
Day 5 – Faults and the reservoir model
Access
Fieldwork is carried out in the Spring or Autumn for climate with outcrops short and flat walks from vehicles.
Logistics
Corinth, Greece: fly in/out Athens. Accommodation in Loutraki, Diakopto with a final night in Athens.

Douglas develops and runs courses in the Reservoir and Open Air series. He has a career background at Conoco-Phillips, Chevron, BHP, Saudi Aramco and TectonKnow. Douglas has published over 60 scientific articles and papers and is an invited committee member, GCSSPEM Roberts meeting (2021); Invited member for AAPG International Research Committee (2017-present).

Mark develops and runs courses in the Open Air, Reservoir, E&P, Uncertainty & Risk and Energy Transition series for TRACS. He has a career background at Shell, AGR, TRACS and Langdale Geoscience. He has served as a distinguished lecturer for SPE and EAGE, acted as Training Director for TRACS and is an Associate Professor Heriot-Watt University. He is also co-author of the textbook ‘Reservoir Model Design’.
Training Manager
25+ years
As Training Manager, Maggie oversees the training programme and organises all open-air and classroom events, handling in-country logistics, tutor support, and HSE representation in the field. With a background in retail and extensive experience as an in-flight supervisor for KLM, her fluency in several languages, equip her well to support clients globally, and manage open air training events.
