The programme revolves around three aspects of working in an E&P company: technical awareness, commercial awareness and interpersonal skills.
The thread through the programme is the field lifecycle: the major stages in the life of an oil or gas field from exploration, through appraisal, development planning, production and finally to decommissioning.
This programme is designed for graduates entering the exploration and production business. The programmes can be tailored to a broad range of backgrounds including engineering, geoscience, commercial, legal, HR and other non-technical support functions.

The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the upstream industry while also emphasising the importance of teamwork, inter-disciplinary communication, and an understanding of what the business needs of the company are.
Case study material is used to reinforce the importance of technical, commercial and interpersonal skills, and the participants spend approximately 50% of the time working together in teams, mentored
by the course instructors.
The programme is supported by the book “Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production”, written by TRACS International, first published in 1998 by Elsevier, and updated in full in 2008. This book will be given as part of the course to all participants.
Subjects are always introduced by pointing out the commercial application of the subject in order to clarify its relevance to the business.
Duration is 1 – 3 weeks depending on whether it involves one or two trainers
and whether field days are included.

Mark runs courses in the Reservoir, Early Development, E&P Overview and Open Air Series. He has a career background at Shell, KUFPEC, AGR and TRACS. Mark is programme manager for the Early Development and the E&P Overview Series.

Mark develops and runs courses in the Open Air, Reservoir, E&P, Uncertainty & Risk and Energy Transition series for TRACS. He has a career background at Shell, AGR, TRACS and Langdale Geoscience. He has served as a distinguished lecturer for SPE and EAGE, acted as Training Director for TRACS and is an Associate Professor Heriot-Watt University. He is also co-author of the textbook ‘Reservoir Model Design’.
