The vertically bedded Old Red sandstone outcrops at Stonehaven allows the geology to be examined at a seismic and outcrop scale. Excellent for reviewing a variety of depositional and deformation features.
Stonehaven Beach provides a natural laboratory which promotes a discussion of modern deposition and erosion processes.
Day 1: Understanding Geological Foundations Participants learn basic concepts such as the Rock Cycle, Plate Tectonics, and Geologic Time, with a focus on rock deposition and preservation. Engaging lectures and practical fieldwork around Stonehaven allow teams to observe Old Red Sandstone formations, making complex ideas accessible. The classroom setting at the Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club fosters discussions on geological impacts on resource management and environmental considerations.
Day 2: Seismic Imaging and North Sea Geological History. The second day introduces seismic imaging and includes lectures on North Sea geological history, focusing on sedimentation and structure guided by plate tectonics.
The day can be tailored to illustrate the subsurface context of the assets that the participants are involved with.
Optional Day 3 Core Review and Practical Application – Participants review geological core samples, linking theory to real-world applications. This practical experience helps non-geologists understand the relevance of core data in decision-making and project planning, improving collaboration with geology teams.
