This course provides a holistic overview of the challenges and opportunities presented by the global energy transition. It should be of interest to those who wish to see a cleaner more equitable future for mankind given the obvious challenges facing earth’s ecosystem currently.

This multifaceted subject covers the history of previous transitions, through to key political and governance issues. The role of the resources industry and key cost drivers therein are examined.

The course contains a mixture of formal teaching, group tasks including an energy transition game* and final presentation. An authentic learning environment is provided to help learners link theory with practice. This is also achieved by introducing a number of country case studies and informal discussions throughout.

*The Energy Transition Game

This 5–6-hour game mimics the changes decision makers face in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Each player takes a different role within a complex energy system. Each role has different responsibilities and decisions to make. These roles include energy producers, providers, technology start ups and the Ministry of Energy. The benefits of this game include experience and understanding of the complexity posed by the energy transition. Exploring transition strategies as well as learning how to navigate through the challenges of the energy transition. Learn how to foster and integrate both technological and social energy innovations.

Course Content

The course covers all aspects of the Energy Transition including:

  • History of energy transitions.
  • Ecosystems on earth.
  • Politics of transitions and governance.
  • Destabilisation and phase out: China, Germany and USA case studies.
  • The role of the resources industry – oil and mining
  • Cost drivers: wind, water, solar and hydrogen.
  • Urban transportation
  • The hydrogen economy.
  • Practical sessions including group work, presentations and the Energy Transition Game.

Angus is a Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Finance at University of Stirling and is completing a PhD in Economics and Business Administration at LUT in Finland.
