What does a successful CO2 storage scheme look like?

Philip Ringrose and Mark Bentley are leading a three day, field-based seminar in Spain in September, covering the subsurface aspects of CO2 storage which need to be managed in order to make a scheme work successfully. This combines Phil’s experiences as project lead for CCS schemes in Norway and Algeria and Mark’s experiences with reservoir modelling and these Spanish outcrops in particular.

The event is aimed at individuals involved in planning storage schemes, either from a technical or management perspective, and anyone interested in understanding the issues surrounding the implementation of CO2 storage schemes in practice.

Using the wide range of reservoir analogues exposed in the Tabernas and Sorbas area, the event will include realistic calculation of storage volumes in heterogeneous systems, issues of capillary trapping and storage efficiency, the chemical and physical aspects of storage and aspects of timing, scale and project monitoring. As a residential course, there will be ample time to also discuss the non-subsurface hurdles which need to be overcome to make these schemes work.

The event will be based in Almeria, Southern Spain, with logistics run by Maggie Hystad Murison from TRACS, and is open on an individual sign-up basis. Arrivals will be on Monday 14th September, departing Friday 18th September (four nights Almeria, three full field days).
